Weekly News

We had a great first full week in first grade!

Conversation Starters:
What book did you get from the library this week?
What was your favorite brain break?
Who is your 4th grade buddy?

Math
We spent the week learning about expectations in math workshop. We came up with “I Can” statements for the activities in centers and learned how to rotate centers.

Reading
In reading this week, we talked about finding a “smart spot”. We learned the three ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words, retell the story. We also learned how to preview a book to help us get started reading.

Writing
In writing this week, we learned what we do if we finished a story. We can add more words, add pictures, or start a new story. We decorated our writers folders, and started our poetry journals.

Science
In science this week, we learned about the scientific method and germs. To follow the scientific method, we started an experiment to “show” our germs. In the experiment, we cut an apple in half. We placed one half of the apple untouched in a plastic bag. We passed the other half of the apple around the class and had the students spread their germs on the apple. Next week, we will see all the bacteria on the touched apple.

Note to Parents:
Please send in any notes or folders that you have not sent in already for your child.  We will not start sending home spelling words to study until after Labor Day.  We have decided to take this next week to play fun sight word review games and teach them some word work centers.

Reminders:
September 1- No School (Labor Day)

September 18 from 6:30-7:30- Literacy Night
