Weekly News 8/25-8/29

Conversation Starters:

  • What has been your favorite math center so far?
  • Can you sing the “Where I Live” rap?
  • Tell me something your wrote about during Writer’s Workshop?

Math
This week we continued introducing math centers and practiced working with partners.  They are doing a great job learning what to do if their partner leaves their center, how to stay focused on math the whole time and how to gather and clean up materials responsibly.

Reading
We have been busy building our reading stamina this week and our class is already reading for 12 minutes without disruptions.  They are continuing to build good reading habits such as different ways to read a book, how to preview a book and predicting words they may see in a book.

Writing
In writing we worked on a pattern book about the “Days of the Week” which will be published and put into our classroom libraries.  We have also been working on stretching and writing words, drawing even hard-to-make ideas, along with using both pictures and words to tell their stories.

Social Studies
The kids had fun learning about maps, globes, the compass rose and the “Where we Live” rap.  We used a venn diagram to compare and contrast maps, played a game around the room using the compass rose and used a map key and symbols to read a map.

Sight words for next week:  the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it
* Look for the words to come home next Tuesday in their folder and their first test will be on Friday, September 5th.
