Reading:
Guided reading groups are in full swing and the class is doing a great job rotating through literacy centers.  During our shared reading time this week we have been working on making predictions.

Math:
This week we have been working on solving word problems and focusing on key words that tell us to add.  We have also been making different combinations to make 4,5,6,7, 8 and 9.  We have been working in small groups and using manipulatives to reinforce some of these concepts.

Writing:
We started Unit 1 in writing this week, which involves the students writing personal narratives.  We are teaching them to use events from their lives or things they like to do to create “small moment” stories.  Our big focus this week was showing them when planning their stories, to make sure they touch, tell, sketch and write.
*Please send in pictures of your child that may help them when writing small moment stories.  Some examples may be pictures of your family, birthday parties, vacations pets, hobbies, etc.  We will be making collages that the students can keep in their writing folders to help them if they are looking for ideas.

Science/Social Studies:

The students learned that scientists ask questions to learn about the world and they use inquiry to look for answers.  We also spent time learning about community helpers to get ready for our Patriot’s Day Assembly.  The class wrote letters to paramedics thanking them for all they do.
